INSTRUMENTS - INSTRUMENTTEJA

piano - a piano
kitara - a guitar
sello - a cello
viulu - a violin
harmonikka - an accordion
huuliharppu - a harmonica ( literally lip harp )
rummut - the drums
sähkökitara - an electric guitar
basso - a bass
syntetisaattori (syntikka) - synthesizer

TERMS - TERMEJÄ

oktaavi - an octave
sointu - a chord
transponoida - to transpose
nuotti - a note
tabulatuuri - a tab
kieli - a string

VERBS - VERBEJÄ

soittaa - to play
laulaa - to sing

Minä soitan + instrument

for e.g.

Minä soitan kitaraa = I play guitar

Minä soitan pianoa = I play piano

Minä soitan bassoa - I play bass

remember to put the letter a after the instrument in a sentence like that, because it’s the object of the sentence. Otherwise it’s likeI play a guitar which would be Minä soitan kitara and it’s not right. :)

Minä laulan bändissä - I sing in a band

Minä soitan bändissä - I play in a band

Minä soitan kitaraa bändissä - I play guitar in a band

Languages

Finnish - suomi / suomen kieli

English - englanti / englannin kieli

Spanish - espanja / espanjan kieli

French - ranska / ranskan kieli

Italian - italia / italian kieli

Estonian - viro / viron kieli

Swedish - ruotsi / ruotsin kieli

German - saksa / saksan kieli

Dutch - hollanti / hollanin kieli

Portuguese - portugali / portugalin kieli

Norwegian - norja / norjan kieli

Hindi - hindi / hindin kieli

Unlike in English, in Finnish you write languages with minuscule.

that’s because then you can notice which word means the language and which means the country. For e.g. Suomi=Finland suomi=Finnish
if you make some mistakes with this, it’s not a big problem. Lots of the Finns don’t know that either.
